Episode 21.5 - Body Snatching!

A Halloween Historical Spooktacular!

Yes, we know...you're still waiting for the Valley of the Dolls discussion. We promise it's on its way, but for now—here's a consolation prize! Maria originally recorded this as an episode for another podcast that never made it to air, so now we're sharing it with you just in time for Halloween.

You've heard of body snatchers before, but did you know they were real? Get a quick history lesson from Maria herself about bodies getting dug up and sold for money. It's icky, gruesome, and just a little bit murdery.

Enjoy, and we'll be back to our regularly scheduled programming in just a few weeks! Happy Halloween!

Episode 21 - Valley of the Dolls (Part 1)

Meet the OG Real Housewife, Jacqueline Susann

Are you ready to visit the seedy underbelly of Hollywood? We are! That's why we've picked Valley of the Dolls by Jacqueline Susann as our read this month! This book follows three friends as they do what it takes--whatever it takes--to make it in the entertainment industry. There's tons to love about this books. There's lots of sex! Plenty of lies! And tons of drugs!

In this episode, we introduce you to the book and to Jacqueline Susann, who is seriously the original Real Housewife. (I mean, she stages a dramatic exit from a yacht!) But don't worry--this episode contains no spoilers, so it's safe to listen to if you haven't read the book.

We also share some big, major announcements about upcoming giveaways! We've partnered with Dutton Books to give one of you a copy of Parker Posey's new book, You're on an Airplane. Then we're getting out the vote by hosting a massive, 10+ book giveaway for people who vote in November! Give this episode a listen for all the details.

Episode 20 - Homegoing (Part 2)

History never really says goodbye.

Look, you guys: this episode never saw the light of day. Some cosmic power out there saw fit to eat part of our recording! But we got everything straightened out, which is great...because we're super excited to discuss Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi!

We start off with a sit-rep of our recent FriendTrip, then drop some crazy book news on you before digging into the book itself. Be forewarned: there are spoilers ahead! But if you're cool with it, we drop lots of knowledge on you. From different narrative points of view to inherited trauma, things get literary. But don't worry, there are plenty of laughs, too!

Be sure to stick around to the very end where we announce our next read, which is going to be a little bit saucy and a LOT steamy.

Episode 19 - Homegoing (Part 1)

The Self-Care Episode

We took a little unannounced break in July, but now we're back and better than ever! This month's read is Yaa Gyasi's Homegoing, which is an epic, multi-generational tale of love, loss, and family. We're excited, and we hope you are, too!

Things have been tough out there lately, so we kick off this episode with a discussion of self-care (5:00). What is it? How can you take care of yourselves in these trying times? Then we hop into the book news (13:30) before giving you all the background you need on Yaa Gyasi's monster hit of a debut novel (20:15). As usual, this episode contains no spoilers. So don't worry! You can listen without worry if you haven't read the book yet.

Episode 18 - Ask Me About My Uterus (Part 2)

It Comes At Night.

It's time for us to discuss "Ask Me About My Uterus" by Abby Norman, her memoir about her eight-year journey to get diagnosed with endometriosis. We picked this book because it takes women almost seven years on average to get diagnosed with endometriosis, which is insane given that 176 million women worldwide suffer with the disease.

(Our discussion episodes are spoiler-filled. If you just want an overview of the book, go check out Episode 17 instead!)

We start things off with book news, then jump into some pretty heavy topics. TRIGGER WARNING: we discuss doctor's unwillingness to believe women in pain. But if you're a woman--or you have women you love in your life--we think you'll find this episode both shocking and enlightning. Even more importantly, we share your stories about your own run-ins with disbelieving doctors. So stick with us! We promise there are some good laughs along the way, too.

Episode 17 - Ask Me About My Uterus (Part 1)

Sometimes being a woman is bullshit.

Hey guys! It's Episode 17, wherein we kick off our discussion of Abby Norman's new memoir, Ask Me About My Uterus! It's one of the hottest books of the summer, and for good reason—Abby shares her saga of pain and an eight-year struggle for a diagnosis. We think it's gonna be a doozy of a read, and it's going to open up a lot of tough topics. So be prepared!

The one thing you don't have to be prepared for? Spoilers. Our Part 1 episodes are always spoiler-free, so you can listen without fear! Also, keep an eye on our social media for this month's book club questions. We're looking forward to hearing about your uteruses (uteri?) or lack thereof, too!

After a crazy-as-Hell April, we are back and better than ever! We're getting back on track with our discussion of Philip K. Dick's Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? We kick things off with some book news before jumping into the discussion. Be forewarned: not only are there spoilers, but we also get pretty dang deep about what it means to be human. Then, we share your answers to our Instagram questions before announcing our May book pick!

If you love Blade Runner, this is the book that inspired the movie! We start by discussing a Reddit comment about rereading books, then jump into talking about Philip K. Dick's crazy life. (Things went...a little nuts there toward the end.) If you haven't read the book before, don't worry: we haven't either, so this is a completely spoiler free episode.

Episode 14 - The Rogue Not Taken (Part 2)

Things get hot and heavy in a library.

Hey guys! Sorry for the one week hiatus...but we're back and better than ever! On today's episode, we're discussing Sarah MacLean's The Rogue Not Taken. (Note: we're labeling this episode explicit because we talk briefly about sex, but it's nothing you wouldn't hear on late night television. We promise.)

We kick things off with book news, including a passionate discussion about Barnes & Noble's future. Then we move into The Rogue Not Taken, where we tackle hard questions like whether the book is feminist and why women's pleasure makes people uncomfortable. Then we share your comments on the book before announcing our March book pick!
